4/3/2005 ~ The Samaritan Religion

... However they did not obey, but they followed their former rituals. ...
~ 2nd Kings 17:24-41

    I. A Religion of Fear
   II. A Religion of Custom
  III. A Religion of Compromise

These men only served God when in physical fear.

Proper fear of God is that you have life.

"... whoever fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him."
~ Acts 10:34-35

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, ... ~ Proverbs 1:7

In the fear of the LORD there is strong confidence, ... ~ Proverbs 14:26-27

... There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, ...
~ 1st John 4:16-18

A religion based solely on fear is one that prays and shows
temporary respect only in time of suffering.

How often do we pray to God when things are going good?

Empty worship includes not obeying God and participating in
traditions and customs of man that are directed at worshiping God.

... keep the traditions just as I delivered them to you. ~ 1st Corinthians 11:1-2

... stand fast and hold the traditions which you were taught, ...
~ 2nd Thessalonians 2:15

... withdraw from every brother who walks disorderly ...
~ 2nd Thessalonians 3:6-7

... through our Lord Jesus Christ that they work in quietness ...
~ 2nd Thessalonians 3:12

... making the word of God of no effect through your tradition ...
~ Mark 7:3-13

Customs get in the way of proper worship of God.

... and not according to Christ. ~ Colossians 2:8

Religious custom today would include:

       ● That is how we have always done it.
       ● That is the way my parents did it.
       ● Your okay and I'm okay.

God demands we obey His traditions, not our own.

The Samaritans did not abandon their rituals as instructed.
While they included God as God, they did not obey His instructions
and held to their ritual practices of many gods.

God's word is simple and plain.

... I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, ... ~ Exodus 20:5

... He is a jealous God; ... ~ Joshua 24:19-20

Many religions today are potpourri religions.
                                           |_ Their own ideas

                                                ⎯⇢ What fits.

God does not want His word to be convoluted by man.

God can destroy you or be your best friend.

Does one worship and serve God or self serving interests?
