9/22/2008 ~ How Men Repent

                                    \ | /
The gospel of Jesus Christ is for ALL.
                                    / | \

... "This Man receives sinners and eats with them." ~ Luke 15:1-2
└─> Jesus was THE master teacher.

Jesus never promised financial wealth to anyone for giving.
Never wrote Chicken Soup for the Soul motivational pamphlets.
He never had a group of introducing musicians follow Him around.

~ He spoke in parables to teach Compassion, Mercy, and Love.

He drew sinners and the afflicted to Him for
He had answers that eluded the religious leaders.

And they were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them
as one having authority, and not as the scribes. ~ Mark 1:22

And they were astonished at His teaching, for His word was with authority.
~ Luke 4:32

~ Parable of the lost sheep.

"... more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine
just persons who need no repentance." ~ Luke 15:3-7

~ Parable of the lost coin.

"... there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner
who repents." ~ Luke 15:8-10

~ Parable of the Prodigal son.
About how men repent.

"... the younger of them said to his father, 'Father, give me the portion
of goods that falls to me.' ..." ~ Luke 15:11-32

God came to tell us how we live and how He wants us to live.

... "Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one
can do these signs that You do unless God is with him." ~ John 3:1-2

The officers answered, "No man ever spoke like this Man!" ~ John 7:46

And so we are blessed in His light, His truth, His teachings.

1. Boy Meets World:

Younger son – wishes father dead so he can have his money, can’t wait.

"... and there wasted his possessions with prodigal living." ~ Luke 15:13
└─> Excessively wasteful with loose living.

Prodical = wasteful, reckless, extravagant, uncontrolled

He could not satisfy his ravenous hunger. <─┐
"But when he had spent all, there arose a severe famine in that land,
and he began to be in want." ~ Luke 15:14

He didn’t have the peace of God. <─┘

The world enslaves you and it can never satisfy you.

"... sent him into his fields to feed swine." ~ Luke 15:15
Freedom in the world leads to chains. <─┘

There comes a time where you will ask,
"Why I was in such a hurry to leave home?"
~ The world will eat you alive.

"And he would gladly have filled his stomach with the pods
that the swine ate, and no one gave him anything." ~ Luke 15:16

Sin is the seed of oblivion.

2. Boy Leaves World:

"But when he came to himself, ..." ~ Luke 15:17
               └─> Repents.

"... 'I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, "Father,
I have sinned against heaven and before you, ..." ~ Luke 15:18

└─> Sees the truth.

" '... Make me like one of your hired servants." ' ~ Luke 15:19
└─> Desires to serve; determination.

~ Go home while your Father waits for you.

And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment, ...
~ Hebrews 9:27

... For the living know that they will die; But the dead know nothing,
And they have no more reward, ... ~ Ecclesiastes 9:4-5

While there is breath, there is still hope.

3. Father Meets Boy:

He saw what the world had done to him. <─┐
"... he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, ..."
~ Luke 15:20

"... let us eat and be merry; for this my son was dead and is alive again;
he was lost and is found. ..." ~ Luke 15:21-24

                      └─> He restored him gladly.

~ The younger son was restored.

... that we should be called children of God! ... ~ 1st John 3:1

Rejoice for the Lord brings back His own!

Seek the LORD while He may be found, Call upon Him while He is near.
~ Isaiah 55:6

Jesus took upon Himself all of our ugliness
~ so that we could come back to Him.
Is it in you to return to God?
God wants our genuine love as our choice, not as a fearful act.

1. COME TO YOURSELF
2. LOVE AND WANT GOD

God Waits for us ALL.
